A Moving-In Checklist for New Tenants

Moving day is busy, so it is easy to skip the small checks. Doing them in the first week protects your deposit and saves arguments later.

On the day you get the keys

• Photograph every room, wall, ceiling, fitting and appliance with the date on the photo
• Test every tap, switch, gas burner, fan, light and lock
• Note the electricity, gas and water meter readings in writing

In the first week

• Change the lock or ask the owner for a spare set, and keep a record of who holds keys
• Send the owner your list of existing faults by message so it is on record
• Meet the caretaker and ask about garbage collection, water timing and lift rules

Keep these papers

• Signed agreement and every rent receipt
• Deposit receipt with the amount and date
• Contact numbers for the owner, caretaker and building committee

A dated photo is stronger proof than a memory. Take the photos before you unpack.
